COMMERCE CITY – In honor of Earth Day, the city’s Community Development Department is showcasing a number of sustainable building ideas for area residents. The display is in the Community Development lobby at the Civic Center, 7887 E. 60th Ave.“We want to provide information to Commerce City residents so they can make their home projects more earth-friendly,” said City Manager Jerry Flannery. “We hope this display gives them ideas on using recycled materials, or other materials that are more earth-friendly.”
The information, which will be on display through the end of May, is designed to inspire residents to make their construction projects more eco-friendly. The display includes alternative materials for a wide range of projects, from geothermal heating to using low VOC paint.
“Finding paint with low VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, is easy and something everyone should consider,” said city planner Jenny Axmacher. “VOCs are emitted as a gas and can have short- and long-term health effects, all of which can be avoided if you take the time to look for the right materials.”
The display also shows how the city has used, or will be using, several of these sustainable materials for interior renovations and façade improvements at the Derby Resource Center. Materials now in use include recycled glass tiles and low VOC paint. Landscaping plans for the Derby Resource Center include permeable pavers and xeric, or low-water, landscaping.
