New Spanish Honor Society holds first induction

These students “represent the best of the best,” said Brighton High School Principal John Biner during the school’s Spanish Honor Society induction Wednesday (April 1). The first 16 students were inducted into the new Miguel de Unamuno Chapter of the society.

Biner recognized the students for their leadership, character, citizenship and scholarship, each one maintaining a 3.5 grade-point average or better.

Officers of the new Honor Society are President Perla Mendoza, Co-President Zachary Albers, Vice President Derek Trujillo and Secretary Julia Smith. Also inducted were members Nicholas Colacchio, Brendon Cornell, Jocelyn Delgado, Justine Espinosa, Kasey McWilliams, Jordan Medina, Alejandra Meraz, Alejandra Montes, William Penfold, Celene Saenz, Virginia Stoddard, and Blake Suppes.

The evening included a keynote address by Jose I. Suarez, a professor of Hispanic studies at University of Northern Colorado.

Honor Society member Colacchio read his essay on why he wanted to be a member of the Spanish Honor Society. Others making brief presentations included each of the officers and chapter sponsor Patricia Andreu.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Rod Blunck attended the ceremony, which was capped by dance performances by members of the Folkloric group BHS Tlatoani and Ballet Folklorico Alegria.
