TROY TETER MEMORIAL DEDICATION

The family and friends of Troy William Teter, gathered at the new Adams City High School on Saturday, August 8th to rededicate his memorial marker and to dedicate a memorial tree in the courtyard at the back of the school. The moving memorial service was blessed with perfect Colorado weather and a bright blue sky and we were all able to look out over the prairie where literally now the buffalo are roaming and the eagles are soaring. A perfect place for Troy.

The musical selections included, “You Light Up My Life”, “You Raise Me Up”, “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “Back in His Arms”. Several family members and close friends spoke of Troy and the tears flowed as everyone remembered this cherished young man whose life here was so short but so profoundly impacted those he touched.

Troy had muscular dystrophy and passed away on December 28, 1992. He attended Rose Hill Elementary, Adams City Middle School, and was a very proud graduate of Adams City High School in June of 1992. He was one of Jerry’s Kids and was a poster child to help raise awareness of this devastating disease.

Troy was born on April 15, 1973 on a snowy evening. At age 3 he was having difficulty walking, was diagnosed at age 5, was put in braces at 10, and in a wheelchair at 11. This does not define Troy’s life though. Troy has been described by not only his mother Kathy Teter, but by everyone who knew him, as courageous, full of joy and happiness, and so very loving. A very touching story was the day Troy was diagnosed and his mother Kathy was crying. Troy said to her, “Don’t cry Mommy, it will be OK”, and went to get her an aspirin. Always caring more for others than himself.

Reba Drotar described Troy life as “a brilliant, bright shimmering shooting star that stunned us with its beauty and left us wanting more”, and “Who showed more courage in his short life than most of will have the privilege of seeing in our lifetimes.”

The courtyard at the new school where Troy’s memorial now resides is where the disabled students enter and exit the building. Troy will watch over them. Rest in peace Troy.

Troy is the son of Rocky and Kathy Teter. His sisters are Tania and Tracey.
