MAYORAL RUN OFF ELECTION TO BE HELD IN BRIGHTON

The Brighton City Charter by vote of the people in 2003 requires that a winning mayoral candidate have a majority of the popular vote, which means 50 percent plus 1. Candidates Dick McLean and Dick Hodge will now compete in a race by mail in ballot on Election Day, December 1, 2009. Currently the unofficial totals for McLean are 2,241 and for Hodge are 1,075. This leaves McLean with 49.989%, just short of the required majority amount.

Adams County has reported that there are 300 ballots unsigned that can be “cured” by November 12 but they cannot say if any or all of them would be part of the Brighton Mayoral count and could be from anywhere in the county. The certification of votes has to be complete by November 20 and if McLean would then show a majority of votes, the run off election would be canceled.
