Adams County Sheriff's Citizen's Academy

Sheriff Doug Darr and the Adams County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the Spring “Adams County Sheriff’s Citizen’s Academy” is available for registration. The Academy introduces citizens to the Sheriff’s Office and provides an opportunity for the attendees to experience practical hands-on training in the field of law enforcement.

Classroom instruction will include an overview of the Office of Emergency Management, records and crime analysis, Patrol procedures, dispatch operations, Internal Affairs, Detention facility Operations, the Victim Advocate program, the Community Resource Team, crime prevention, the civil process, Rampart Search and Rescue, the Reserve and Explorer programs, and gangs. Attendees will also receive training in Verbal Judo, arrest control tactics, self-defense, range operations, and driving. The academy will also have demonstrations from the Posse, SWAT team, Bomb Unit, and the K-9 Unit, Tasers, and Tactical Vehicle Interventions.

The Academy is a ten-week course with training every Tuesday evening, beginning on March 9, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Saturday, April 24, 2010 and May 8, 2010, from 9:00 to 3:00 p.m. The primary location for the training will be at the Adams County Sheriff’s Office Substation, 4201 East 72nd Avenue, Commerce City, Colorado, but some training will be off-sight.

Sheriff Darr stated, “This is a unique and valuable opportunity for our citizens to experience law enforcement firsthand and for us to continue our partnership with the members of our community. The training is an abbreviated, modified version of the twenty-one-week academy cadets go through to become certified police officers, so it is valid and realistic. ”

Applicants must be at least 21-years-of age and pass a background check of driving and criminal records. Adams County residents will have first priority and the class will be limited to twenty attendees.
