27J, BCHS mediation recommendation

Mediation was held Jan. 21 between Brighton Collegiate High School and School District 27J concerning the districts action in November to assume temporary management of the school.

On Jan. 22, Mediator Steven Clymer sent a letter to Board President Lynn Ann Sheats and copied it to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Rod L. Blunck. A copy of that letter is enclosed.
In his summary, Clymer wrote, “Given the controversy of the past” (as stated in the November 3 letter to parents), and in light of this new incident at the School, coupled with the above inconsistent message to the parent body, it is my advisory recommendation for the Board to determine that the District’s action in assuming temporary management of the School was based on a reasonable determination that there was a serious and imminent threat to the health, safety, or welfare of the School or District students, the community, or the substantial property rights of the District or the School.”

Following receipt of the advisory, Dr. Blunck said, School District 27J will continue to maintain temporary management of BCHS. We’ll continue to evaluate the situation and will take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of students.”
