27J open-enrollment applications due Feb. 19

Open enrollment or school choice is an option offered by School District 27J. A student may apply to enroll in a school outside his/her school attendance area during the open-enrollment window. The deadline to apply is Feb. 19.

Applications should be submitted to the school of choice. Approved applications will be valid for the 2010-11 school year only. Transportation of students participating in open enrollment is the responsibility of the parents/guardians (see exception below).

Information for high school students living in Crown Homes and Platte View Landing Apartments: Students who will be in grades 10 through 12 and who currently attend Prairie View High School have the option to stay at PVHS through their senior year. All other high school students in these neighborhoods are assigned to Brighton High School.

A student who wishes to stay at PVHS as allowed above must complete an Open Enrollment/Choice form. Students who choose to attend BHS need only to enroll at BHS. Transportation will be provided to both schools during this transition.

All the materials required to apply for Open Enrollment are posted on the School District 27J Web site at www.sd27j.org, under Open Enrollment in the left-navigation menu. Application forms and additional information also are available at each school and at the Ed Harshbarger Educational Services Center, 18551 E. 160th Ave. in Brighton.

A separate application must be completed and submitted for each child.

Approval decisions are made by the school principal and will be made in March. Open-enrollment approvals are based on space available, programs available and staff available.

Currently, 4,102 of 13,912 students - 29 percent - are choosing open enrollment.

Decisions on Open Enrollment applications will be based on the following priorities:
1. Students who live in the attendance area of the school.
2. Student applicants who live within the district but do not live within the attendance area and who previously attended the school they wish to attend.
3. New student applicants who live within the district who are siblings of a currently enrolled student who live at the same residence as the currently enrolled student.
4. New student applicants who live within the district and are not siblings of a currently enrolled student.
5. Student applicants who live outside of the district and who previously attended the school they wish to attend.
6. New student applicants who live outside of the district who are siblings of a currently enrolled student and who live at the same residence as the currently enrolled student.
7. New student applicants who live outside of the district and who are not siblings of a currently enrolled student living at the same residence.
