DICK’S SPORTING GOODS PARK TO HOST STEP UP FOR CANCER ON AUGUST 8

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Thursday, April 22, 2010) – Dick’s Sporting Goods Park and Kroenke Sports Charities have announced that for a second consecutive year they are partnering with Generations Cancer Foundation to host Step Up For Cancer on Sunday, August 8 from 7 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the stadium.

Did you know that over 20,000 Coloradans will be diagnosed with some form of cancer—in 2010 alone? But here’s the good news. Due to earlier diagnosis and improved treatments, the five year survival rate is now 66%. That’s up from 50% just 30 odd years ago. And while 16% may not seem like a big number to you, it means a lifetime to someone else.

It is because of people like you that these numbers are changing for the better. Through the giving of time, the dedication of energy, and the drive to raise funds, we are truly transforming lives.

“We are proud to partner with non-profits which provide programs, research and patient services for cancer patients,” said Deb Dowling Canino, Vice President of Kroenke Sports Enterprises. “The Pepsi Center has been the home of the Susan G. Komen Denver Race for the Cure for several years and we look forward to a similar relationship with the Generations Cancer Foundation.”

That’s where Step Up For Cancer comes in. Step Up For Cancer is an awareness, fundraising, and educational stair-climbing event focused on uniting different generations in support of the fight against cancer. It’s also designed to increase awareness of community cancer resources and foster greater collaboration among non-profit cancer organizations.

Step Up For Cancer’s goal is to provide participating non-profit cancer organizations of any size with as much support – financially and otherwise – as humanly possible. How it looks depends on who is involved. A family walks away with new information that could greatly help their loved one. Two organizations decide to put the power of partnership to use knowing they can do more together, than alone. A new generation of elementary and high school students feels empowered to champion a cause they once felt helpless against.

Everyone is invited to participate in Step Up For Cancer. The course is comprised of 33 rows (approximately 1,765 stairs) and uniquely designed to be done at your own pace and ability – no matter what that might be. There’s also a course for the specially-abled which will take place on the field. Don’t feel like doing the course? There are many other ways to get involved. You could sponsor a team, donate your time before the event, or simply cheer on your friends and family as they take to the stairs.

In addition to walkers, climbers, and runners, non-profit cancer organizations will be situated around the stadium providing first-hand access to important information about their services. Some of these areas include healthy living, prevention, early detection, treatment, access to care, patient and caregiver support, research, advocacy, and survivorship.

Never before have so many non-profit organizations come together in one venue to support each other in the fight against cancer. Step Up with us.
