27J Director Cordrey resigns from board

School District 27J Board of Education Director Todd Cordrey resigned Tuesday, in a letter to the board, to pursue continuing advanced education in educational leadership, he said.
Cordrey has represented 27J’s District 6 since he was elected in November 2003. District 6 is in the northwest part of 27J. He served two years as board president, from 2007-09.

He will be working toward a doctorate in education at University of Colorado, which, he said, is a three- to four-year process.

“By resigning from the board I’ll be able to devote the time I need to focus on my educational opportunity as well as to improve upon what we are doing at the library.” Cordrey is manager at the Anythink Brighton library.

“This is a very big deal for me,” he said. “I have never taken a doctorate-level class and I need to give the classes the attention they deserve; and to focus on making the library a special place in our community.”

Of his time on the 27J board, Cordrey said, “What I’m most pleased about is the board’s work bringing forth a governance model that serves the public at a much higher level. Through that model, the board is directly accountable to the public for the outcomes at the school district.

“Serving on the board is one of the most significant experiences of my life; it’s been a wonderful, significant, meaningful experience.”

School District 27J is actively seeking candidates to fill the District 6 seat as well as the District 7 seat, which was vacated by Lynn Ann Sheats. She resigned May 25 to accept the position as administrative assistant to the superintendent and board.

The Board of Education plans to seat the new member in each district in August.

Toward that end, the board is sending a vacancy announcement to all homes in District 6 and District 7.

Individuals who are interested are asked to answer five questions and turn them in to the board by June 17. The board will hold an informational meeting at 6 p.m. on June 22 to provide candidates with an overview of the district and to answer questions.

Candidate interviews will be held June 29 for District 7 and June 30 for District 6. For more information, contact Sheats at 303-655-2952 or lsheats@sd27j.org.
