Senior Volunteers to Staff RTD Breakfast Station on Colorado’s Bike to Work Day, June 23, 2010

Denver, June 22, 2010 – Members of the Regional Transportation District (RTD) Senior Volunteer Program will give their time Wednesday morning to staff the RTD Bike to Work Day breakfast station at Market Street Station in downtown Denver. The volunteers will provide information and distribute refreshments to bicycle commuters.

These volunteers are members of the RTD Senior Volunteer Program, a 24-person group that has assisted with programs, activities and services for the past 15 years. The senior volunteers not only reduce the cost of assistance, they also provide experience and knowledge along with commitment and concern for the community. Currently, this group saves RTD an estimated $1400.00 a month, which equates to over $252,000 since the start of the program.

The volunteers help in several areas, including special events, Special Discount and Eco Passes, and numerous administrative tasks. This group looks forward to volunteering and several members also volunteer with other organizations. RTD senior volunteers have been featured in 9News “9 Who Care,” KEZW 1430 Spotlight, the Denver Post, Denver Westword’s “Best of Denver” list, and in the books “What’s Age Got To Do With It?” by Kelly Ferrin and “A Midlife Journey: Chasing The Secrets To Aging Strong” by Nick Adams.

RTD is offering cyclists a breakfast station the morning of Bike to Work Day at Market Street Station Plaza in downtown Denver on Wednesday, June 23, 2010. Those planning to ride their bike on Bike to Work Day should register with the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) by going to www3.drcog.org/BikeToWork.
