Victim of Fatal Accident on Interstate 76 and Bromley Lane Identified

Brighton police have identified the driver killed in a head-on collision which occurred on I-76 as 57-year-old James Edward Hefner, of Hudson.

Hefner was driving a blue Chevrolet pick-up in the eastbound lanes of I-76 between Bromley Lane and Bridge Street at about 5:08 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 14. Hefner’s vehicle crossed the center median into westbound traffic, where it collided head-on with a tanker truck carrying crude oil. The tanker truck then veered across the center median into eastbound lanes, tipping the second tank trailer, and spilling a small amount of crude oil.

Police are unsure what caused Hefner’s vehicle to cross the median, but have found indications Hefner may have experienced a medical emergency.

Hefner was airlifted to an area hospital, where he later died. The driver of the tanker truck, 35-year-old Steven Bourassa, of Greeley, received only minor injuries in the crash.

I-76 was closed in both directions between Bromley Lane and Weld County Road 2 from about 5:15 p.m. until approximately 7:45 p.m.; eastbound lanes remained closed until approximately 10 p.m.
