20 Year Old Sentenced in 4th of July Shooting

Adams/Broomfield County District Attorney, Don Quick, announced the sentencing of Amber Lona (DOB: 08/20/1990) in the shooting death of her friend in Broomfield, Colorado.

On Sunday, July 4, 2010, at 5:37 p.m., officers from the Broomfield Police Department responded to a report of a possible suicide that occurred on a sidewalk in the 3000 block of W. 134th Ave. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased 20 year old male, Anthony Varra (DOB: 04/04/1989), from Broomfield. The male had an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

Further investigation determined that Lona and the victim were looking at the victim's handgun that was thought to be unloaded. Lona then pulled the trigger and the victim was struck in the face with one bullet, killing him.

Lona plead guilty to Criminally Negligent Homicide (F5) on December 2, 2010.

District Court Judge Thomas Ensor sentenced Lona to 5 years probation, 30 days in jail, 200 hours of community service, $16,323.73 restitution.
