Brighton’s population up 59 percent

The U.S. Census Bureau released 2010 census population counts for Brighton this week. According to the data released, Brighton’s population grew from 20,905 in 2000 to 33,352 in 2010, a 59 percent increase.

“We are pleased to see the official population count,” said Community Development Director Marv Falconburg. “We’ve known that we are one of the fastest growing cities in the state as these numbers attribute. Brighton is a great place to live, work, learn and play, and we look forward to continuing to make our city an attractive community for people of all ages.”

Additional statistics include:

* Of the 33,352 population, there are 23,372 that are over 18 years of age.
* Race
o White – 18,325
o Hispanic or Latino – 13,505
o Two or more races – 491
o Asian – 402
o Black or African American – 378
o American Indian and Alaska Native – 191
o Some other race – 38
o Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander – 22
