Charges Filed in Child’s Death

On Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2011, 20 month old Michael Harris died of internal injuries he received earlier that week. The Brighton Police Department conducted an investigation into the circumstances of the injuries and as a result felony charges have been accepted and filed by the District Attorney of the 17th Judicial District.

Harris’ mother, 23 year old Rosa Anna Key, is charged with Child Abuse Resulting in Death, a Class 2 Felony. Key was taken into custody on Wednesday, Feb 9, at the Brighton Police Department without incident. Key is currently in the Adams County Detention Facility on $100,000 Bond.

Also charged is 31 year old Donald Scarlett. Scarlett is charged with Child Abuse Resulting in Death and Murder in the 1st Degree, a Class 1 Felony. Scarlett surrendered himself, also on Wednesday, Feb 9, at the Brighton Police Department. Scarlett is currently in the Adams County Detention Facility. Scarlett is being held without bond, (no bond amount is authorized).

Because felony charges have been filed, the District Attorney now has authority of the case and the Brighton Police Department will make no further comments.
