Greater Brighton Fire recently received a new 100’ Pierce Aerial Platform fire truck. The truck was acquired through the FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. The grant provided $600,000 toward the purchase of the new fire truck and the total cost of the truck after equipping it will be approximately $950,000.
The new truck, named “Tower 51” is an addition to our fleet and is the first platform for our district. “Tower 51” is called a tower because it is a ladder truck with a platform at the end and extends to 100 feet (25 feet longer than our current ladder truck). It is able to pump 2000 gallons of water per minute and has an all steel platform with a 1000 lb. rated capacity that permits 3 firefighters and 250 lbs of equipment to be raised 100’ in the air. The firefighting platform features two master stream mounted nozzles as well as a handheld nozzle and hose allowing firefighters to fight a fire from multiple directions. The platform will increase both firefighter and citizen safety during rescue and firefighting operations. The platform on the end of the ladder will allow for rescue directly into the bucket, rather than operating from the end of a ladder only.
The current ladder truck “Truck 51” will be reassigned to Station 53 and be renamed “Truck 53” and will continue to respond on calls. An engine will be reassigned to Station 51 (located at 425 S. Main Street) to handle the majority of calls and the platform “Tower 51” will primarily respond to fire alarms and structure fires.
There will be a wetting ceremony to induct “Tower 51” into the fleet on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, during the Board of Directors meeting. The meeting will be held at Station 52 which is located at 5 Firehouse Road in Brighton and begins at 6 pm.
