Brighton Police Department reminds merchants about sign regulations

In response to increased numbers of complaints regarding traffic issues caused or contributed to by advertisers carrying portable signs, code enforcement officers in Brighton have begun contacting merchants utilizing such signs to remind them of some important sections of the City’s regulations on signage.

In particular, merchants and business owners are being reminded that:

1) Off-Premises signs require a permit and must be located within the same commercial development as the business for which the products, services or uses are sold or offered.

2) No sign may be erected in a public right-of-way unless specifically permitted.

3) Signs which interfere with the safe operation or effectiveness of vehicle or pedestrian traffic are prohibited.

Merchants contacted so far have been cooperative in addressing these issues, and police will continue to monitor the issue.
