A Call to the Public... Leaders Needed...

By Kathy McIntyre, Gateway News

I know it is only May but we all need to start thinking about November 1, 2011 NOW. Why? Because this is election year and that is Election Day and you need to run for office or someone you know does. The issue is this, we all complain about the consequences of government BUT unless we all participate, we can no longer complain. And if that happens what on earth will we write about on facebook, twitter and the famous Gateway News blog??? Many candidates have already kicked off their campaigns, so you need to start now.

So how do we participate? First and foremost we all MUST VOTE. We all have plenty of time to register to vote as October 3, 2011 is the last day to register to vote to be eligible to vote in this November’s election. Visit this website for all the information you need to register and tell everyone you know to register now so everyone has time to get the job done. https://www.sos.state.co.us/Voter/secuRegVoterIntro.do One individual vote DOES count and has swung many an election.

Second you need to run for office or strongly encourage people you know to run for office. Remember this is a democracy and we are a government by the people and for the people. So that means we must have people in office that are real genuine people. Think about the news lately. Are you happy with all the scandal and waste of money and hearing about how we can’t have what we need for our communities and our schools?

You can change that and one person does and can make a difference. So please start the conversation at your dinner table or school or church or club or at the gym or grocery store or library with everyone you know. There are good genuine people out there that we need in office that will not let the wool be pulled over their eyes, and who will vote and make change with you in mind because they are just like you or maybe it should be you.

So both School District 27J and Adams 14 have elections this fall. In District 27 there are four seats open on the school board, Districts 1, 2, 6 and 7, and in Adams 14, there are two seats available on the school board. In both districts you need to live in the district you are running for but all electors in the district vote for all seats.

In Commerce City there are four seats open on city council, two at large that everyone who lives in Commerce City can run for and two Ward seats in Wards 2 and 4, where you need to live in that ward to run. Everyone in the city votes for the two at large seats and the ward seats, you need to live in that ward to vote for those ward seats. Also the position of mayor is open this year and everyone can run and vote for that office.

In Brighton, there are four ward seats available, one each in Ward 1, 2, 3, and 4. You need to live in that ward to run for that ward and you need to live in that ward to vote for the ward seat. No mayor being elected this year.

In Thornton the position of mayor is open and is are four council positions in each ward, 1, 2, 3, and 4. Everyone can run and vote for mayor. You need to live in the ward to run and vote for ward councilmember.
