Woman Charged for Death of Family of Five

Adams County District Attorney Don Quick announced the filing charges against a woman for causing the deaths of a family of five in a vehicle collision.

Monica Chavez (DOB: 03/31/1977) was charged with five counts of Criminally Negligent Homicide (F5) in connection with the deaths of the Stollsteimer family, which included a husband, wife and their three children.

During rush hour on February 17, 2011, Thornton Police responded to a multiple auto accident at the intersection of Grant and East 84th Ave. in Thornton, CO. Police investigation determined that a SUV driven by Chavez was reported as driving south in the northbound lanes of Grant at a high rate of speed. When the SUV reached the intersection of Grant and 84th, it launched in the air and landed on top of a pickup truck. The pickup was carrying the Stollsteimer family and all passengers were killed on impact.

Chavez was taken into custody by Thornton Police this evening.
