Xcel Energy sponsors open house on pipeline effort

Company to gather initial comments in Fort Lupton, Commerce City

Xcel Energy is inviting residents along a proposed 34-mile-long natural gas transmission pipeline project in Weld and Adams counties to two open houses next week in Fort Lupton and Commerce City.

Xcel Energy needs to construct a 24-inch, steel natural gas transmission from a new natural gas metering facility in Fort Lupton to the company’s Cherokee Generating Station northeast of downtown Denver.

Xcel Energy is beginning to implement its Colorado Public Utilities Commission-approved Clean Air Clean Jobs plan by retiring three of our Cherokee Generating Station’s coal-fired units, adding a new natural gas plant and switching a fourth unit to run on natural gas. A new pipeline is needed to deliver the natural gas to our Cherokee power plant for this conversion.
