Time Line of Large Hole in Road at 104th and Tower Causes Outage for Commerce City Customers

July 17, 2011 12:30 a.m.

Nearly 100 percent of customers have power again. Repairs to isolated outages will continue to be the focus of work crews until all reported outages are restored. We apologize to customers who were not able to get through on the phones earlier this evening. Our phone system is working properly again. If you have not reported your outage, and are still without power, please call 303-637-1350.

Tomorrow, United Power crews will evaluate the damage to the underground lines at 104th that are out of service. Customers in this area may experience a blink in service when we switch your power back to your regular feed.

United Power knows that power interruptions are never convenient. The last week has been a challenge for our electric system, our line crews and our customers who have experienced outages. We appreciate your patience and support while we have been working hard to restore your electric service.

____________

11:30 p.m.

Repairs have been completed and power restored again in some sections of Fronterra Village. Crews are working on one more known issue that should allow service to be restored for the remaining Fronterra and High Point customers still without power.
____________

10:45 p.m.

Crews are still in the affected areas making repairs. Some areas of Fronterra that were restored have lost power again. Our crews are changing blown fuses and isolating other equipment issues. The load that was added when power was re-routed created some problems on the line. We apologize about the duration of this outage. United Power has a lot of people working to restore your power.

We have had high call volume and apologize to customers who were on hold for long periods of time or could not get through.
______________

9:45 p.m.

Crews are still working on service for customers in Fronterra Village and High Point. Due to the damage in the road at 104th, we have two major lines out of service. Service has to be re-routed to other lines serving this area in small sections to prevent further damage.

United Power is aware of isolated outages north of 104th and are investigating the cause.

City engineers are attributing the damage in the road to a bentonite buckle. Heat and moisture caused the bentonite to give, which damaged the road and the underground lines beneath it.

We are also experiencing high call volume. We sincerely appreciate your patience.

8:55 p.m.

Electric service for customers north of 104th has been restored. Crews are working on repairing service to a small section of customers in Fronterra Village and a section of customers living in High Point. Thank you again for your patience.

Crews are still working on the fault at 100th and Chambers that is causing outages for customers as far south as 96th. Crews will continue to troubleshoot small sections of the line at a time in order to restore power as safely as possible.

The north portion of Fronterra Village was restored and efforts are now focused on isolating this fault to restore power to the southern section. Power is being restored in small sections as access is allowed. Fronterra Village and Buffalo Run East are the latest communities to have power restored. Crews remain on site and are working with one section of line at a time in order to ensure restoration is done safely and without damaging other sections of line or additional equipment. Thank you for your patience.

The outage in Commerce City is believed to have been caused by a sinkhole on 104th between Reunion Parkway and Landmark. We know we have two major feeders located underground in this location. We will not know how much longer restoration will take until we can assess the total extent of the damage. We have personnel in the office and crews on site working as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience. We will continue to provide updates as we have them.

Commerce City customers served by the Reunion substation are experiencing an outage. Crews are on site, but access to the area is being restricted by Police. There is a large hole in the middle of the road at 104th and Tower that may have affected underground lines. Police report that the road "folded like an accordion" and are blocking entry into the area until it is deemed safe. We will continue to survey the area for any other possible causes to this outage. If you have not reported your outage, please call our outage line at 303-637-1350. Reporting your information helps us gauge the extent of the problem. We appreciate your patience. We're working as quickly as we can to restore your power.
