19 Year-Old Sentenced in Auto/Motorcycle Collision

17th Judicial District Attorney Don Quick announced that Joshua Wittig (DOB: 03/25/1992) was sentenced today for causing the death of a man in an automobile and motorcycle collision in Thornton, Colorado.

In the early hours of October 1, 2010 a SUV, driven by Wittig, was headed westbound in the eastbound lanes of the 3200 block of Thornton Parkway. A woman called 911 to report that Wittig had nearly collided into her vehicle and that only her evasive actions prevented the collision. Shortly thereafter, Wittig turned into the lane of oncoming traffic hitting and killing the victim, John Hines (DOB: 03/07/1977), head-on. In addition, the Colorado Department of Health toxicology report stated Wittig was under the influence of Xanax, Valium, Percocet and marijuana. Wittig admitted to self medicating and being under the influence. Senior Chief Deputy DA Tiffany Sorice stated at sentencing about the death of Mr. Hines that “The impact on the family is unspeakable, the impact on his friends is profound and the impact on the community is vast.”

On May 6, 2011, an Adams Count Jury found Wittig guilty of Vehicular Homicide DUI (F3) and Reckless Vehicular Homicide (F4).

Adams County District Court Judge Chris Melonakis sentenced Wittig to Colorado Department of Corrections for 10 years and six months for the Vehicular Homicide DUI and 6 years for the Reckless Vehicular Homicide, to be served concurrently.
