Committee to redraw State House and Senate district kicks off statewide tour for public input on proposed maps

Today, members of the commission to redraw or “reapportion” state legislative districts will begin touring Colorado to discuss their proposed State House and Senate district maps. The Colorado Reapportionment Commission will begin its tour tonight in Salida and will host 24 additional events throughout Colorado in August and early September. Following the public hearings, a final map will be approved and submitted to the State Supreme Court for review by the October 7 deadline.

The commission is established by law every ten years following the United States Census. It consists of 11 members appointed by the Governor, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and minority and majority leadership in the Senate and House. Click here to visit the commission's website to learn more.

The State Constitution sets criteria the commission must use to draw House and Senate districts based on the results of the census. Beginning on May 12, the commission held 11 public hearings to develop initial maps. The commission will now tour the state again to gather feedback on the maps developed over the course of the summer.

Colorado State Senator Morgan CarrollSenator Morgan Carroll (D-Aurora), a member of the commission, offered the following comment on the process:

“I am very excited about getting input from the people of Colorado. It is important that the voters of our state are heard because these districts directly affect their representation in the State House and Senate. I encourage everyone to be a part of the process.”

Below is a schedule for the reapportionment public hearings throughout the state. Click here to view the initial Senate maps. Click here to view the initial House maps.
