Update from your Colorado State Senator MARY HODGE

Hope you're having a great summer! I'm having a wonderful mix of family time and legislative duties' time. Dick and I spent afternoons this past week end at the Adams County Fair selling hot dogs, nachos and homemade root beer to benefit the Brighton Sister Cities program. The presence of the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile (courtesy of one of the Sister Cities members who used to work for Kraft of which Oscar Mayer is a part) certainly helped call attention to our efforts.

The Water Resources Review Committee met last week. We heard presentations on dam safety, groundwater levels in the South Platte River Basin, produced water and hydro-power retrofits. There has been a lot of press lately on the topic of hydraulic fracturing by the oil and gas industry and the potential impact on our water supply. I think it's good news that the industry has volunteered to do baseline groundwater quality sampling before and after drilling from new pads. The Oil and Gas industry gave a very thorough presentation about the safeguards they put in place to protect our groundwater and they were very clear about why "fracking" was a necessary part of the process.

I'm hosting a Back to School town hall Tuesday, August 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Prairie View High School, 12909 East 120th Avenue. There will be presentations from the 27J Chief Academic Officer, local teachers, counselors and librarians, College in Colorado, Colorado PTA, and CSU Extention Health and Nutrition Program. Children's Hospital will do Concussion Recognition Training. This training will help coaches (and parents) recognize the signs and symptoms of concussions and allow them to be in compliance with the Jake Snakenberg Concussion Recognition Act passed last year. We're also doing a classroom supplies drive to help those families with limited resources as their children go back to school.
