Portion of Fernald Trail closed beginning Sept. 15

COMMERCE CITY – A portion of the Fernald Trail will be closed beginning Thursday, Sept. 15 as crews from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) work to replace the bridge at I-76 that spans the South Platte River.

Signage near the trailhead, located at 70th Ave. and Colorado Blvd., alerts users the trail is closed about a half-mile in. The connecting bridge to the South Platte River Trail is also closed as well.

The bridge, built in 1967, is in poor condition and was identified for replacement as part of CDOT’s ongoing maintenance plan. CDOT estimates the trail and connecting bridge will remain closed for about three weeks.

During construction, users can access the South Platte trail at 74th Ave., just west of the river.
