27J’s first GYM run set a high standard

More than 200 fun runners who came out to participate in the first-ever 27J GYM Run raised $2,000 that will go back to the school physical education programs. The Sept. 19 run, hosted by the School District 27J Wellness Committee, exceeded the committee’s expectations for a first effort. The run was aptly named G.Y.M., meaning Get Yourself Moving!

“The 5K/1mile Get Yourself Moving fun run was a big success,” said coordinator Katie Lopez, of 27J Nutrition Services.

She reported that more than 200 -- including the superintendent, some school board members, principals, teachers and families -- participated in the first for the G.Y.M. fundraiser.

Planned in part as a fund-raising event, proceeds were designated to go to the school Physical Education department of the runner’s choice.

In addition to the fundraising effort, the event helps the wellness committee’s goal of promoting healthy lifestyles and physical activity among students and the 27J communities.

G.Y.M. includes a 1-mile run/walk and a 5K run/walk … a distance and speed for any body.

South Elementary School had the most participants with 39 entries.

Acknowledging that the turnout was great and that the committee hopes for more next year, Lopez said, “We can’t wait for next year to see you Get Yourself Moving in the next for Race for the G.Y.M.

The 27J Wellness Committee includes district staff members from all departments and parents from the school community. It was organized in 2006 to inform and enforce the district’s wellness policy to the community.

Watch for the committee’s annual wellness fair in January.
