A 7-year-old child who was not restrained when the vehicle in which he was riding struck the rear of a pick-up truck was airlifted to Children’s Hospital on Wednesday, September 23, 2009.
The accident, which was reported at 3:42 pm, occurred at the intersection of 4th Ave. and Southern St. The driver of the silver Honda Accord in which the boy was riding became distracted by a passenger in the vehicle and failed to notice a silver Ford Ranger stopped at the intersection in the northbound lane and struck the pick-up’s rear bumper. The unrestrained child was thrown from the back seat and hit his head on the Accord’s dashboard. He was airlifted to Children’s Hospital with a head laceration, and later released.
The driver of the Accord, 37 year-old Margarita Salgado, of Brighton, was cited on charges of No Valid Operator License, Child Restraining System Required, Careless Driving, and Child Neglect.
The Brighton Police Department would like to remind drivers of both the importance, and the legal requirement, of utilizing an approved child restraint system to protect children from injury, even in low-speed collisions.
