Brighton: City meets with congressional representatives

City officials and members of Brighton’s Youth Commission returned last week from the National League of Cities (NLC) Congressional City Conference in Washington , D.C. This annual conference is an opportunity for city officials to learn about federal policy issues such as transportation and the federal budget.

The Colorado Municipal League (CML) hosted a session with Colorado Senators Michael Bennett and Mark Udall, as well as a session with Congressional Representatives Edward Perlmutter and Corey Gardner. These sessions allowed city officials to discuss how FasTracks will help with transportation efforts in Brighton , and how federal community investment programs such as Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) are needed as an important funding source to assist with sidewalk improvements, public safety and jobs. These discussions help the city formalize budgetary and programmatic approaches for the future.

City Council representatives and the Brighton Youth Commission also attended First Lady Michelle Obama’s presentation on her “Let’s Move!” initiative, a nationwide movement to reduce childhood obesity within a generation.
