Adams County Household Chemical Roundup on May 2

The next Adams County Household Chemical Roundup will be held on Saturday, May 2 at Water World, 88th and Pecos, in Federal Heights. The event will operate from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Oil-based paint products and solvents, electronics (TVs, computers, cell phones, etc.), motor oil, antifreeze, vehicle batteries, house and garden chemicals, scrap metal, fire extinguishers, fireworks, ammunition, mercury, propane tanks and passenger vehicle and pickup truck tires will be accepted for recycling and proper disposal.

A contribution of $20 per vehicle is recommended to help offset the high price of hazardous waste disposal, which can cost more than $100 per household through a private company. There is an additional charge of $1 per tire, $8 per computer monitor, $15 per TV, and $0-$2 for other electronics.

There will also be a FREE Drop-and-Swap area where people can share and take leftover household cleaners, paint products, car wax, fertilizer and garden products, antifreeze, and other products that are still in their original containers. Sharing these products helps protect the environment, because the products get used up rather than becoming part of landfill trash. The reuse of already purchased products reduces the demand for more products to be manufactured, and this too helps lessen our impact on the environment. The Drop-and-Swap also helps reduce the Roundup’s disposal costs, by reducing the amount of waste that must be disposed at the event.

The Roundup CANNOT accept waste from businesses, and cannot accept radioactive waste, smoke detectors, empty drums, asbestos, tractor tires, explosives stronger than fireworks, nor any compressed gases other than propane. Additionally, residents with water-based, latex paint products are encouraged to dry the paint at home using absorbent (kitty litter, sand, dirt), and dispose of the dried paint with regular garbage instead of bringing this non-hazardous waste to the events. This will significantly help lower the Roundup’s disposal costs. Please call Ethan Novikoff at (720) 322-1508 for more information.

This Roundup welcomes residents of Brighton, Commerce City, Federal Heights, Thornton, and unincorporated Adams County.

The City of Northglenn is NOT participating in this event. Consequently, Northglenn residents CANNOT bring waste to this event and will be refused entrance. Northglenn residents are encouraged to contact the Northglenn Solid Waste Division at (303) 450-4004 for more information and a list of disposal services available to them.

Since the cost of the program is underwritten by participating communities, participants will be asked to show a driver’s license, utility bill, or phone bill to verify their address. Residents may register in advance online at www.tchd.org/householdchemical.htm. Participants who register in advance will receive more detailed information prior to the event, and will speed up the rate at which cars can be processed during the event.

This event is sponsored by Adams County; the cities of Brighton, Commerce City, Federal Heights, and Thornton; Suncor Energy (USA); BFI; Tetra Tech EC, Inc; Darling International Inc.; and Tri-County Health Department. Arrangements have been made to make the Roundup accessible for people with disabilities. Call Ethan Novikoff at Tri-County Health Department, (720) 322-1508.
