Two neighborhood groups have plans to participate in National Night Out here in Commerce City as they stand up to crime in their neighborhoods.
At the Reunion Southlawn Park from 6:00 pm til 8:00 pm the event will be held for Reunion residents. It is a time to have fun, meet neighbors, strengthen your Neighbors to Neighbors (Neighborhood Watch) group and take a stand against crime. Free food and beverages will be provided by the Commerce City Police Department.
The second event will be held at Lester Arnold High School from 5:00 pm til 8:00 pm. This event is brought to you by the Derby, Kemp, and Monaco Neighborhood Associations. This event is free. Come and learn the techniques for crime and drug prevention in your neighborhood. Enjoy an evening with your neighbors. Meet the police department. Receive your Child’s ID. And receive lots of other useful information.
National Night Out is held all over the United States. National Night Out 2008 involved 37 million people in 15,449 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. National Night Out 2009 is expected to be the largest ever. NNO is sponsored by National Association of Town Watch in partnership with Target.
National Night Out, a year-long community building campaign, is designed to: (1)
Heighten crime prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in local anticrime programs; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Along with the traditional outside lights and front porch vigils, most cities and towns now celebrate National Night Out with a variety of special citywide and neighborhood events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, festivals, visits from local law enforcement, safety fairs, and youth events.
