How about the added excitement of competing for some “reely” cool prizes?
Don’t spare the rod – spoil your child with a fun morning trawling the lake at Commerce City’s second annual Fishing Frenzy, a free fishing derby for kids. The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 29. at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.
Kids age 3-15 can land lots of fun at this free event, which features a craft station, tips from professional fishermen and, of course, a fishing contest! Prizes are awarded for different age categories for biggest fish, smallest fish and most fish caught. New this year is the use of live bait, which will be provided free to participants.
The derby is offered in two sessions to accommodate all entries (participants may register for one session only). Sessions run 9-10 a.m. and 10:30-11:30 a.m. Lunch will be available 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. for a small fee.
“The fishing derby is a great way for families to get out and enjoy another aspect of Commerce City,” said Collin Cody, city recreation coordinator. “We have a lot of recreational opportunities in the city, and this event showcases one of the lesser-known activities – fishing.”
More than 200 children participated in the 2008 derby, the inaugural event, and organizers hope to have even more children this year. “We’re excited to continue the derby,” Collins said, “and hope to build it each year.”
The 2009 derby offers some fun activities and a good time for the whole family. Expert fishermen will teach participants how to tie knots, cast a line, how to identify different fish and more at the fishing technique station. And kids of all ages will enjoy making buttons, T-shirts and coloring activities at the craft station.
A trip to the refuge isn’t complete without a bison tour – the entire family will love this wildlife adventure! Take advantage of one of four tours, offered that morning at various times. You can sign up on site for a tour; each tour can accommodate about 30 people.
The number of derby participants is limited – so register early by calling 303-289-3789.
To get there, take Quebec Street to 56th Avenue and head east to Havana Street. Turn north on Havana and follow it to the refuge’s main entrance at 5650 Havana.
Fishing Frenzy is sponsored by Commerce City, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge and Bass Pro Shops.
