South Adams County Water & Sanitation District Signs Wastewater Service Agreement

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (July 15, 2009) – The South Adams County Water & Sanitation District Board of Directors (District) entered into a Service Contract with the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District (Metro) wherein Metro will provide wastewater treatment services to District customers from its Northern Treatment Plant that is contemplated to be fully constructed by 2015.

To ensure that sufficient wastewater treatment capacity would be available for future development in the northeastern quadrant of the Denver metropolitan area, the District and the City of Brighton began working with Metro, in 2002, to develop a cost-effective solution for all three entities.

After nearly seven years of negotiations, Metro has agreed to construct a new Northern Treatment Plant by 2015 that will provide wastewater services to the District, the City of Brighton, and a portion of the City of Thornton. The District will connect to the Northern Plant through the South Platte Interceptor, and by 2020 all of the wastewater flows in the District’s northern service area will be diverted to the Northern Plant.

The District’s Williams Monaco Wastewater Plant is currently operating at less than half its 8 MGD rated capacity and will continue to serve District customers until it is no longer economically feasible to operate. The Service Contract with Metro provides assurances that there will be sufficient wastewater treatment capacity well into the future.
