School District 27J committee hosts fun run/walk

The School District 27J fun run fundraiser should be a win-win-win for everyone. Aptly named G.Y.M., the first-ever event means Get Yourself Moving!

Hosted by the School District 27J Wellness Committee, the 1 mile/5k fun run/walk will be Sept. 19, beginning at 8 a.m. at the BHS Stadium, with check-in from 7:15-7:50 on Cox Avenue. Registration fee is $20. All registrations are due by Sept. 11.

Planned in part as a fund-raising event, proceeds will go to the school Physical Education department of the participant’s choice. The P.E. departments can use the money for equipment, host clinics for the kids, or conferences, said coordinator Katie Lopez of 27J Nutrition Services. That’s win No. 1.

Part of the wellness committee’s goal is to promote healthy lifestyles and physical activity among students and the 27J communities. G.Y.M. includes a 1-mile run/walk and a 5K run/walk … a distance and speed for any body. .It is hoped that Get Yourself Moving will do just that. Win No. 2.

Win No. 3: All run/walk participants will receive a T-shirt in the finish-line area.

For run/walk details and registration forms go to www.sd27j.org in the left-hand navigation bar or at any 27J school.

The 27J Wellness Committee includes district staff members from all departments and parents from the school community. It was organized in 2006 to inform and enforce the district’s wellness policy to the community.

Activities the committee coordinates for that purpose include the annual wellness fair in January and, coming this year, the committee is planning a traveling library at the elementary schools featuring books on healthy eating, fun activities and basic health knowledge. Another committee goal is to plan an event for the spring, possibly a school-to-school field day contest in the spring.
