District Announces Special Guest Readers for Anythink Huron Street Grand Opening Event

Library Also Raises Money for Haiti Relief during Event

THORNTON, Colo.-Jan. 29, 2010-During Rangeview Library District’s new Anythink Huron Street grand opening celebration, several guest readers will join in the adult story time, “Reflections on Light,” from 2:30-4:30 pm, including Adams County Sheriff Doug Darr, Colorado author DJ Murphy, and Fulcrum Publishing founder and president Bob Baron. Library director Pam Sandlian Smith will act as master of ceremonies for the program. The public is also encouraged to bring selections on the theme of light to read during this incredible event.



The library will also be collecting donations at the Feb. 6 grand opening on behalf of the American Red Cross Mile High Chapter for Haiti relief efforts. Millions of people were affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti. A $10 donation can provide a family with two water cans to store clean drinking water, basic first aid supplies or a blanket appropriate to the climate. Checks can be made out to American Red Cross and will be accepted, along with cash donations, in the lobby of the library.

Special Guest Readers

Robert C. Baron, the founder and president of Fulcrum Publishing, is a historian, scientist, and the author or contributor to 25 books including Pioneers and Plodders: The American Entrepreneurial Spirit. He was program manager for the Mariner II (Venus) and the Mariner IV (Mars) onboard space computers. In 1971, he founded Prime Computer, which became one of the Fortune 500 largest American companies, and was its first president and chief executive officer, building a worldwide business. He lives in Colorado.

Doug Darr, Adams County Sheriff, is a 34-year veteran of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office. He was selected as a deputy in 1972, rose through the ranks and served in every Sheriff’s Office Division as a supervisor, manager or commander. He was appointed Undersheriff in 2001 and was elected to the Office of Sheriff in 2002. He has a wide range of experience that includes Director of Emergency Management, SWAT Team Commander, Director of Technology Services and Retirement Board Chairman. He served as a special investigator with the Colorado Attorney General’s Special Prosecution Unit investigating allegations of political corruption and organized crime.

D.J. Murphy graduated from Harvard University cum laude in 1968 and Georgetown University Law Center in 1973. At Georgetown he served as Editor-in-Chief of the school’s international law journal. As an international corporation lawyer, he worked for law firms in New York City, Paris, and Cincinnati, representing mostly large multinational companies and governments around the world, including the Middle East. On a pro bono basis, he also represented refugees escaping political, religious, and other persecution in Bosnia, Ukraine, and the Middle East and seeking asylum in the United States. In 1999, he retired from the practice of law in order to teach and write, and moved with his wife to Ft. Collins. Part of each year they live in a small village in southwest France. He taught for five years as a visiting professor at Ecole Supérieure de Commerce in Bordeaux, France. A Thousand Veils, published in 2008, is his first novel. In 2009, the Colorado Authors’ League, the association of professional writers in Colorado, awarded it the “Top Hand” Award for the best mainstream fiction published in 2009, and the novel was selected as a finalist for the Colorado Book Award by Colorado Humanities Center for the Book.
