27J student receives President’s Volunteer Service Award

Vladimir Mauricio Perez, 17, of Brighton has been honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award.

The award was presented by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Obama. Perez participated in the Spirit of Community program this year as a representative of Prairie View High School where he is a student.

Perez earned his award by volunteering in different capacities for the following organizations: Saint Catherine of Sienna Youth Group, Saint Augustine’s Prayer Group, Saint Augustine’s Worship Band, and the Archdiocese of Denver Charismatic Renewal Congress for Youth, Curso Felipe Retreat, School of Evangelization Saint Paul, National Honor Society, Senior Home, and babysitting during Parent Teacher Conferences.

Teenagers will not listen if you talk to them with an aggressive tone. If you get along with them, they will listen.

“I also learned that if you want teens to pay attention, you have to keep them active by asking questions because if you don’t, then they will probably fall asleep on you. These skills are some of the ones I received from my experience in the retreat, and I am glad I learned them.”

PVHS Principal Dr. Chris Fiedler said, “Vladimir is an exemplary scholar and student leader here at PVHS. I am not surprised in any way to see Vladimir recognized for his service to others. This exemplifies who he is.”
The award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant time to serve their communities and country. It is sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

“The recipients of these awards vividly demonstrate that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their
