Colorado Unwanted Horse Alliance provides grants to 15 Colorado horse rescues and sanctuaries

Funds to Help Support Horses in Rising Trend

Denver, CO – March 18, 2010 The Colorado Unwanted Horse Alliance (CUHA) has provided $500.00 grants to 15 horse rescues and sanctuaries located in Colorado supporting their efforts to cope with the rising number of unwanted horses in the state. CUHA is hoping to continue to build relationships with the horse rescues throughout Colorado to further its mission to reduce the number of unwanted horses in Colorado and to promote collaboration with horse professionals and experts from throughout the state.


As a follow up to the grant award, CUHA met with the rescues to discuss ways CUHA and the rescues might work together on new initiatives and programs to tackle the growing numbers of unwanted horses. CUHA estimates that over 6,000 horses become unwanted in Colorado each year.

Christopher Whitney, president of the board of directors, says, “These organizations provide a necessary service to the many equine victims of neglect, abuse or simply, the economy. These grants help support the care of those horses as well as build our shared organizational missions for creating solutions together.”

CUHA is building relationships with the horse rescues throughout Colorado to reduce the number of unwanted horses in the state and to promote collaboration with horse professionals and experts throughout Colorado.

As part of the initiative, CUHA and rescues began collecting baseline data in an effort to begin quantifying the problem, identifying trends and designing solutions. Discussions at the meeting focused on the goals for continued data collection, as well as identifying solutions and programs to reduce the number of unwanted horses in the state.

In addition to having its own booth at the March 12-14 Horse Expo, CUHA also provided a booth for all horse rescues and sanctuaries in Colorado to have their literature, information on available horses for adoption and to talk with visitors about the unwanted horse problem.
