New date, same great fun at April fishing derby

COMMERCE CITY – Bring your fishing pole and get into the “spring” of things at Commerce City ’s third annual Fishing Frenzy, a free kids’ fishing derby, coming Saturday, April 10.

The time of this year’s event has changed from late summer, but you’ll have the same great fun. The derby kicks off spring fishing at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, so you know the fish will be hungry!

Kids age 3-15 will have lots of fun at this free event, which features a craft station, professional fishermen and, of course, a fishing contest. Prizes are awarded in each derby for biggest fish, smallest fish and most fish caught. Live bait will be provided free to participants.

Along with great fishing, the 2010 derby offers fun family activities. Expert fishermen will teach participants how to tie knots, cast a line, how to identify different fish and more at stations throughout the event. And kids of all ages will enjoy coloring T-shirts, painting wooden fish and more at the craft station.

The derby is offered in two sessions to accommodate all entries (participants may register for one session only). Sessions run 9-10 a.m. and 10:30-11:30 a.m. Lunch will be available 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. for a small fee.

More than 250 children have participated in each of the 2008 and 2009 derbies, and more are expected this year. The number of derby participants is limited – so register early by calling 303-289-3789.

To get there, take Quebec Street to 56th Avenue and head east to Havana Street . Turn north on Havana and follow it to the refuge’s main entrance at 5650 Havana .

Fishing Frenzy is sponsored by Commerce City , the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, Bass Pro Shops, Take Me Fishing and the Reunion Metro District.
