Brighton Police ensure school zone safety

With the first day of school beginning today for many 27J School District students, the Brighton Police Department has ensured police officers will be available at the start and end of all school shifts through Friday, Aug. 20, in order to re-educate parents and community members about school zone safety.

The focus for the first two days, Aug. 12 and 13, will be re-education about school zone/student safety. During the second week, Aug. 16 - 20, officers will focus on traffic enforcement within all school zones, with summonses being issued.

“Traffic and congestion around school zones can become very cumbersome,” said Police Chief Clint Blackhurst. “Ensuring the safety of the students, staff, parents and community members is a priority for us throughout the year, however it is important for us to have a strong presence at the beginning of the school year. We remind everyone about the safe drop-off areas, crossing safely at designated crosswalks, and abiding by the school zone speed limit.”

Officers will be on-hand at the following schools:

North Elementary
Northeast Elementary
South Elementary
Southeast Elementary
Pennock K – 6
Bromley East Charter
