Commerce City receives second ‘Playful City’ designation

COMMERCE CITY – The city has been named a “Playful City USA” for the second year by KaBOOM!, a national organization the promotes access to play areas for children.
Commerce City also received the designation in 2009. It is one of 118 cities nationwide and four in Colorado to receive the award.

KaBOOM! promotes play as a valuable part of a child's healthy development and a crucial factor in their overall well-being. Children who play do better in school and develop cognitive skills that are linked to learning and academic performance, according to the agency.

The organization cited Commerce City’s work to identify play spaces and to incorporate play areas in planning for future growth as examples of important accomplishments in being named a “Playful City” for 2010.

In the past year, Commerce City launched an online parks and trails map that residents can easily use to find nearby parks and trails and what amenities they offer, including playgrounds, basketball/volleyball/tennis courts, restrooms, picnic shelters and more.

Commerce City has 18 parks, more than 25 miles of trails, and several open spaces for residents to enjoy. View the interactive parks and trails map and get more information online at www.c3gov.com (click on “Recreation and Outdoors”) or by calling the Recreation Center at 303-289-3760.
