COMMERCE CITY – More than 1,700 princesses, witches, super heroes and their families attended Commerce City’s annual Creepy Hollows, an event that has become a favorite tradition for area residents.This year’s event was Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Commerce City Recreation Center. Themed as a fall festival, scarecrows, pumpkins, trees and bales of hay transformed the gym into an autumn scene. Attendance was strong throughout the family event, which marked the first time Creepy Hollows took place during the day.
Little ghosts and goblins fished for toys, made free-throws and raced to pump up balloons. Parents and children delighted in the carnival-like atmosphere, which featured several game booths where contestants all won a prize.
Kids and parents alike dressed in costumes that ranged from fairies to cartoon characters and more. They made spiders from pipe cleaners, decorated miniature pumpkins and filled gloves with Hot Tamales candy and popcorn to make “zombie hands.”
A witch in flowing robes of black and purple wandered through the crowd of festival-goers, doing magic tricks that amazed and awed her audience.
Another fun feature was the Mad Science show, where audiences learned how different gases react to water and chemicals. “Oohs” and “wows” were heard as a jack-o-lantern spewed green foam, a witches cauldron smoked and nitrogen bubbles popped in kids’ hands.
Teen Halloween followed later that night, with attendance nearly double what it has been in recent years. More than 400 teens took part in face painting, danced to a live DJ and bounced through a giant inflatable obstacle course. Teens also visited a creepy cemetery and had their fortunes told as part of the fun.
By Monday morning, city staff had broken down the carnival, swept up the straw and packed up the scarecrows, transforming the gym to its more “normal” state, in which basketball and volleyball players replace the vampires and zombies – until Creepy Hollows 2011, that is.
