Flag football game scores big for charity

Commerce City – The Saturday afternoon sky was clear, but a storm was brewing at the Adams City High School football stadium.

The Adams High School football team and the Police Department were preparing for the gale that was coming in the first Cops vs. Kids charity football game.

While the PD outlasted the Eagles 22-14, it was the two local charities – Project Present and the Commerce City Recreation Center Youth Scholarship Fund – that won.

More than $4,000 was raised from donations, ticket sales and proceeds from the raffle.

Project Present is an annual charity where donations are used to purchase presents for children in the city who may otherwise not receive presents on Christmas Day.

The Youth Scholarship Fund donations help sponsor children to participate in sports and activities at the Commerce City Recreation Center.

Gift certificates to La Casa del Rey and Bear’s Car Wash were given away, as well as an X-Box 360, an I-Pod shuffle, and an autographed football from Denver Bronco Head Coach Josh McDaniels.

Along with raising money, the game helped build relationships between city youth and the Police Department.

La Casa del Rey, RAC Transport, Bear Carwash, MPress Printing and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 19 were sponsors of the game.
