TWO-DAY COMMERCE CITY FERIA DE SALUD/FAMILY 9HEALTH FAIR PROVIDES THOUSANDS OF HEALTH SCREENINGS

Over 3,000 Adults and Children Served at Adams City High School in Commerce City

Underscoring the need for free and low-cost health services, 9Health Fair announced today that more than 2,000 adults and 1,000 children had their health checked in just two days at Commerce City’s third annual Feria De Salud/Family 9Health Fair at Adams City High School. The health screenings, which ranged from low-cost blood screenings, flu shots and immunizations to free dental screenings, glucose screenings and Pap smears, were provided by more than 800 medical and non-medical volunteers, including 400 bilingual English and Spanish speaking volunteers, from around the metro area. Additional results include:

* 1,256 adults had a blood chemistry screening, which provides information on cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels, glucose, thyroid function, calcium levels and more.
* 426 adults learned about the health of their blood through a blood count screening
* 235 men checked their risk for prostate cancer through a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) screening
* 144 people learned their average blood sugar levels through the Hemoglobin A1C screening
* 139 adults purchased a colon cancer screening kit
* 189 women received a free Pap smear screening
* 907 immunizations were administered

“Our three years of experience of creating a fair with maximum impact for a high risk/low access population has resulted in our most complete fair yet for the Commerce City community,” said Jim Goddard, President and CEO of 9Health Fair. “Through on-site surveys and interactions with people at the fair, and upon hearing the ‘buzz’ in the community in the days following, we can see that the experience of the attendees was very good. We are also seeing that the community participants prepare more for their experience at the fair and understand the benefit. We can’t express enough our gratitude to our major partners, the City of Commerce City, and Entravision, for the success of Feria de Salud.”

People who took advantage of any of the blood screenings, along with those who had a colon cancer screening or Pap smear, will have their screening results mailed to their home within four weeks.

“The city of Commerce City helped to provide about 600 volunteers to facilitate this health fair, and we are very proud to offer this event to our community,” said Commerce City Mayor Paul Natale. “We are committed to the health and wellness of our neighbors, family and friends and we look forward to serving even more people next year.”
