United Power Offers Scholarships, Trips to Washington, D.C. for Area Youth

Applications Now Available

Brighton, Colo.—Applications are now available for United Power’s 2011 Youth Programs which include $10,000 in scholarships and an all-expenses paid leadership trip to Washington, D.C. Fifteen students in the United Power service territory will be awarded scholarships from the member-owned electric cooperative. Three youth will be granted a visit to Washington, D.C. during the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour to be held June 9-16, 2011.

The annual youth tour of Washington, D.C. provides opportunities for students to make friends with other youth from across the country, gain a better understanding of cooperative principles, see local sights and develop leadership skills. Students must be a high school junior or senior to qualify for youth trips.

The annual United Power scholarships total $10,000 and are given to students who are either served by the cooperative, or dependents of members. Winners are chosen based on overall academic performance taking into account grade point average, ACT and SAT scores, extra-curricular activities, and a brief essay. The following scholarships are available:

* One $1,000 Basin Electric Power Cooperative Scholarship.
* Two $1,000 United Power Colorado College Scholarship.
* One $1,000 Lois Lesser Educator Scholarship.
* Two $500 Tri-State Generation & Transmission Association Scholarships.
* Eight $500 United Power Book Scholarships.
* One $1,000 United Power Non-Traditional Student Award.

Only one application is needed to apply for all available scholarships.

Applications and more information on United Power’s Youth Programs are available at www.unitedpower.com. Applications for Washington, D.C. are due Jan. 1, 2011 and applications the scholarship program are due Mar. 1, 2011.
