Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia today urged Coloradans to mark the 25th anniversary of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday on Monday, Jan. 17th by volunteering to serve others. Coloradans are urged to join hundreds of thousands of Americans to “make it a day on, not a day off” by volunteering in remembrance of Dr. King’s life and legacy by taking action to help address community needs. “The 25th anniversary of the federal Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday is a highlight Colorado citizens can celebrate by using service and volunteerism as a solution to strengthen their communities,” said Garcia.
Projects currently registered in Colorado include a Recycling Education and Awareness project in Durango , a journaling project with school children in Cortez, and a park clean-up initiative in Denver . Many organizations are using Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as the springboard for planning additional community service projects throughout the year.
The Governor’s Commission on Community Service (GCCS) is leading the state’s participation efforts by assisting communities in developing community service projects. Volunteers and organizations are encouraged to register their projects or find a project to participate by visiting the GCCS website at www.colorado.gov/gccs. Registered projects will be highlighted in the annual Colorado Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Report.
