Woman Sentenced in I-25 Fatality

Adams/Broomfield County District Attorney, Don Quick, announced the sentencing of Elizabeth Long (DOB: 07/02/1975) for causing two car accidents resulting in a fatality and others being seriously injured on Interstate 25 in Adams County in July 2010.

On July 5, 2010 between 11:00 and 11:15 PM, multiple calls were received by Colorado State Patrol regarding a car being driven southbound in the northbound lanes of I-25. A 2008 Black Toyota Rav4, driven by Long, was first observed traveling southbound on I-25 North at I-25 and 120th Ave. Approximately 2.6 miles further, near the exit for 92nd Ave., Long struck a vehicle, causing serious bodily injury to the driver and bodily injury to the passenger. Long continued without stopping and drove another 5.2 miles south in the northbound lanes to I-25 and 58th where she struck another vehicle killing the passenger, Mary Warren (DOB 02/06/1988), and seriously injuring the driver. During the almost 8 miles traveled by Long, multiple vehicles swerved out of the way to avoid collision with Long. Long’s blood alcohol level was .252, five times over the legal limit for driving impaired.

Long pled guilty to two counts of Vehicular Homicide (F3) and (F4), four counts of Vehicular Assault, two (F4) and two (F5), Leaving the Scene of an Accident (F5) and Driving Under the Influence on December 14, 2010.

DA Don Quick says: “This was not an accident, but rather the result of a conscious decision to drink and drive. Because of that decision an amazing young woman is dead and others lives are shattered.”

Adams County District Court Judge John Popovich sentenced Long to a total of 15 years to the Colorado Department of Corrections and was immediately taken into custody.
