Kids fishing derby rescheduled

Fishing Frenzy offers same great activities on new date

COMMERCE CITY – The fourth annual Fishing Frenzy is back on. This free kids fishing derby, originally set for April, has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 11 at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.

The event was canceled April 7 when the impending midnight federal government shutdown made it difficult to determine if the Saturday event could be held. Families that pre-registered were notified via mail that they have first chance to re-register for the new date. Registration for the derby will open to the general public on May 13.

Along with prizes for biggest and smallest fish, Fishing Frenzy features crafts and professional fishermen who will instruct young anglers in skills such as tying flies. The Fishing Frenzy will open at 8 a.m. for registration and check-in. The first derby kicks-off at 9 a.m., followed by the next wave at 10:30 a.m.

To get to the refuge, take Quebec Parkway to Prairie Parkway/64th Avenue. Head east on Prairie Parkway to Gateway Road. Turn left onto Gateway Road to the Visitor Center

Fishing Frenzy is sponsored by Commerce City, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, Bass Pro Shops, Take Me Fishing and the Reunion Metro District. For more information, call 303-289-3659.
