Serious Injury Accident - 8800 Block of 1-25 / Stolen Motor Vehicle


Updated Information

On 06-13-2011, a 14 year old male from Thornton turned himself into the Thornton Police Department indicating he was also in the vehicle when it crashed and he had fled the scene prior to police arrival. This juvenile had minor injuries related to the accident. This information brought the total number of juveniles in the vehicle at the time of the accident to 6.

On 06-14-2011, at approximately 4:00 pm, Thornton Police Traffic Investigators arrested the alleged driver of the stolen vehicle involved in this injury accident. Traffic Investigators arrested a 15 year old juvenile male at his home in Westminster for investigation of:

Theft by Receiving CRS 18-4-410
Careless Driving Causing Serious Bodily Injury CRS 42-4-1402
Hit and Run – Failed to Notify Police of an Accident CRS 42-4-1606
Hit and Run – Failing to Remain at the Scene of an Accident Involving Injury CRS 42-4-1601
No Valid Drivers License CRS 42-2-101

The driver was not injured in the accident.

The juvenile was released to his parents pending filing of formal charges with the Adams County District Attorney’s Office.

Thornton - Yesterday afternoon, approximately 3:27 pm, The Thornton Police and Fire Department were dispatched to an injury accident in the 8800 block of southbound Highway I-25. Preliminary investigation indicates that a southbound 1993 Ford Explorer made a lane change into the path of a semi-tractor trailer clipping the right front end of the semi-tractor trailer. The driver of the Ford Explorer lost control of the vehicle causing it to roll over on the highway.

According to witnesses the Ford Explorer was occupied by 5 young Hispanic males. Witnesses stated that 4 of the Ford Explorers occupants were helping a seriously injured juvenile out of the vehicle and down the embankment and into a field as officers arrived on scene. Two of the suspects then fled the area, while two remained with the seriously injured juvenile. The 1993 Ford Explorer was a reported stolen vehicle out of Brighton, Colorado on June 9th, 2011.

A subsequent search of the area located one of the suspects in the vicinity of 88th Avenue and Huron Street. This 17 year old juvenile from Federal Heights, Colorado was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The 5th occupant of the Ford Explorer remains at large and is described as a Hispanic male, possibly in his early twenties.

The following Ford Explorer occupants were all taken to area hospitals with varying injuries:

12 year old male from Thornton, Colorado – Critical Injuries
14 year old male from Thornton, Colorado – Non-Life Threatening Injuries
15 year old male from Thornton, Colorado – Non-Life Threatening Injuries
17 year old male from Federal Heights, Colorado – Non-Life Threatening Injuries


The semi-tractor trailer driver will not be facing any charges related to the accident.

Thornton Police Traffic Investigators have not been able to determine who was driving the Ford Explorer at the time of the accident.
