Pepper Spray Contaminates Classroom at Adams City High School

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (October 13, 2011) – The Commerce City Police Department is investigating an incident that occurred this morning at the Adams City High School, 7200 Quebec Parkway.

At around 9 a.m., a 15-year-old student discharged a can of pepper spray in a classroom full of students. Approximately 35 students and one teacher in that classroom were affected by the pepper spray, and two students were transported to local hospitals for treatment of minor eye and lung irritation.

The classroom was evacuated while the fire department ventilated the room. No other classrooms were affected, and the school schedule was not disrupted.

It is unclear how the student obtained the pepper spray or why it was discharged, though it does not appear to be a malicious act at this time.

The student is currently on administrative suspension from the school while school officials and police investigate the incident. Criminal charges and disciplinary action from the school will be determined at a later time.
