Commerce City Council Look at Six-Month Moratorium on Drilling

On December 19th, the Commerce City council will be addressing an ordinance declaring a six-month moratorium on any land use for the conduct of oil and gas operations that include hydraulic fracturing and related drilling activities in the city limits.

The question is whether the City Council should impose a moratorium on land use for oil and gas operations that include hydraulic fracturing and related drilling activities in Commerce City until studies have been conducted to determine if amendments should be made to the Land Development Code to preserve the public health, safety, and welfare. In addition, Commerce City has the unique situation by its proximity to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge with its large deposits of hazardous materials.
