A lifelong teacher-turned-school-board-member, School District 27J’s Joan Kniss was honored this month by the Colorado Association of School Boards as one of the organization’s “McGuffey Award” winners for her work on the board. She was nominated for the recognition by Board President Todd Cordrey with the support of peers on the 27J board.
"Joan Kniss personifies leadership, compassion, justice, competitiveness, diligence,” Cordrey said. “She has quietly led or participated in many different organizations from the Lions club, church committees, employee groups, child advocacy non-profits, and school district committees.
“This passion to serve led her to a 33-year career as a classroom teacher. Mrs. Kniss believes every child can learn and grow; and she refuses to give-up on any them," Cordrey said.
The McGuffey Award “honors that unique board member who brings to his or her board work both the head and the heart of committed and passionate service,” according to the CASB Web site. Winners were announced at CASB regional meetings.
“When I think of Joan Kniss, I think of kids,” said Lynn Ann Sheats, 27J board of education vice president. “Her history with the school district is one of distinction as a teacher, parent, grandparent, volunteer and most recently board director. Joan served as a teacher in our district for more than 30 years and was recognized as the Colorado Teacher of the Year in 2001.”
Kniss was elected to the school board in November 2005.
The McGuffey Award is named after the famed seven-volume McGuffey Readers of the 19th century United States frontier that taught “the basics.” According to the CASB Web site, “The McGuffey Readers … not only taught kids reading and grammar, but also helped them develop good qualities. It was one of the most widely used and influential textbooks of its time in transferring not only knowledge, but also certain virtues required to fulfill the responsibilities of citizenship in a free society.”
