DENVER, CO—Magician Aaron Eisenberg is charged with creating the impossible; his greatest feat from October 5th-9th, 2009 is to eliminate bullying from schools. This week is national bully prevention week, and multiple Denver area schools are utilizing the magician and youth speaker as a fun and positive way to combat bullying.
Nearly one in every three children is involved in bullying according to the National Institute of Child Health and Development, a number so large NICHD director Duane Alexander, M.D. described the epidemic as “a public health problem.”
Bullying authority Dr. Dan Olweus claims bullies identified by the age of eight are six times more likely to be convicted of a crime by the age of twenty-four and are five times more likely than non-bullies to end up with serious criminal records by the age of thirty.
Eisenberg believes he can decrease bullying using an educational presentation and magic tricks. He interweaves educational messages like how to avoid bullies with magic in an attempt to keep students interested in what he says. At one point in the program he produces a 50 foot long multi-colored streamer from his mouth. Eisenberg then tells students it’s what is on the inside that counts and just like the different colors coming from his mouth made the magic more interesting, the differences in each person make them more interesting.
“I remember riding the bus home and one older kid would always try to bully me. I did my best to ignore him, but he was relentless. I think a lot of kids go through that, and I just hope I can provide some new tools for them to deal with it,” says Eisenberg.
Eisenberg has been performing magic for 17 years. As a youth keynote speaker, the largest group he has worked with was nearly 3,000 high school students at the Virginia State DECA conference. He presents his educational magic and bullying program all across the country and has been seen in nearly 30 states.
